April, 2006 Habitat For Humanity’s 3rd Build In conjunction with it’s partner, the Sudbury Real Estate Board, and the S.R.E.B.’s exclusive partner, The Amazing Persona, the Sudbury District Habitat For Humanity announces its April 27th Ground Breaking Ceremony to build a new home in Coniston for the Ackerland Family. Through major sponsors, materials and crews generously donated by Sudbury area contractors and retailers, along with big-hearted volunteer labour, the HFH builds modest homes and sells them interest-free to families that qualify through a stringent selection process. Selected families do have earned income, but cannot afford to purchase a home through conventional mortgages. While local politicians and dignitaries unite on April 27th at 3:00 P.M. at 65 Fourth Street, Coniston (next door to the Coniston Curling Club) to break the ground for HFH’s 3rd build in the Sudbury District, plans are already underway for the 4th home, as well as many more builds. August, 2006 Habitat for Humanity Sudbury District is relocating a donated house for its fundraising efforts. Sunday August 27th 10am start time. Thanks to the efforts and donations from local businesses listed below, Habitat for Humanity will be moving a house that was donated by New Sudbury Centre, Osmington and CPP. Habitat for Humanity is an independent, non-profit, ecumenical housing program dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing by building homes in partnership with families in need. The ministry of Habitat is to provide simple, decent, affordable housing to those who would not qualify or be able to afford a conventional mortgage. The Habitat program is about home ownership, a long term solution to break the poverty cycle. For further details please contact Lise Rheault, Public Relations officer, Habitat for Humanity, at 525-4869. August 29, 2006 Ackerlands Receive the House that Habitat Built Habitat for Humanity, Sudbury District, has officially handed over the keys to a new home to Kyle and Melissa Ackerland at a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 29, 2006. “We would never have been able to afford a decent home with a traditional mortgage,” said Melissa Ackerland, whose new home has a market value of approximately $145,000. Habitat for Humanity Director, Lise Rheault said, “A Habitat for Humanity home is a hand up, not a hand out”. Donated materials and volunteer labour help reduce the cost of a Habitat home: Habitat then provides a no interest mortgage. Further, Habitat for Humanity requires chosen families to put in 500 hours of sweat equity. The building of this home at 65 Fourth Avenue in Coniston started on April 27, 2006. It took approximately 100 volunteers about 3,500 volunteer hours to build the home. Over 70 donors provided sand, building supplies, floors, cabinets, fixtures, appliances, drywall, labour, food, drinks and services. The Sudbury Real Estate Board and The Amazing Persona partnered as the main sponsors for this build. “We now have a beautiful home in a great location for the kids,” said Ackerland. “It’s all the more special as our new baby will be born in this home.” The Ackerland’s currently have four children; Austin 10, Krystina 8, Ethan 6 and Braeden 4. This is the third home that Habitat for Humanity has built in the City of Greater Sudbury. The next Habitat for Humanity home will be built in the fall of 2007.
